The use of propriety SSD’s on MacBooks limits the amount of space to dual boot Windows and MacOS on the same hard drive.

Wouldn’t it be nice to boot windows from a small internal SD card?

YES, YOU CAN BOOT WINDOWS FROM YOUR INTERNAL SD card SLOT ON YOUR MACBOOK

Contrary to Apple and Microsoft, this can be done simply. This guide is not for external SSD drives & USB Drives! It’s for booting Windows 10 off your internal SD card slot on your MacBook Pro or Air. This guide will only work if you have a internal SD card reader on your MacBook, make sure to check before following this tutorial.

I wrote this primarily because, up to now, I haven’t seen a guide that works for booting Windows 10 off an internal SD card, I thought this would be a great way to save space on the internal drive AND always have windows with you every where you go!

This is very useful for accessing Windows any time on your MacBook without using precious space on your internal hard drive

Jeremiah’s recipe for installing Windows 10 on a internal SD card

You can use most ANY fast SD card, no less than a UHS Speed Class 3 SD card with 64GB or more space

I recommend using the Transcend JetDrives. They are half size cards made for MacBooks that disappear in the internal SD card slot.

They have different SD card for different compatible MacBook models:

13-Inch MacBook Air
Transcend 128GB JetDrive Lite 130 Storage Expansion Card for 13-Inch MacBook Air (TS128GJDL130)

13-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display
Transcend 128GB JetDrive Lite 330 Storage Expansion Card for 13-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (TS128GJDL330)

15-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display
Transcend 128GB JetDrive Lite 360 Storage Expansion Card for 15-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (TS128GJDL360)

  1. A Macbook with an internal SD card slot
  2. Copy of the amazing Win2USB (https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/)
  3. A download of Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft
  4. USB 8GB+ Flash Drive
Step 1:

Download the Windows 10 ISO on to your Macbook

Step 2:

Insert USB Flash Drive

Step 3:

Run the Apple boot camp wizard (Hit the magnify glass in the upper right corner and type “Boot Camp”)

Step 4:

Run the boot camp installer, if prompted, point at the ISO download of Windows 10 in your Download directory.
This will partition your hard drive and take away space from OSX, this will be temporary. If need be, back up all your files to an external hard drive or the cloud to make room for Windows 10.

Choose the USB flash drive to create the Windows 10 installer with the Boot Camp drivers to allow Windows to run on Mac Hardware.

Step 5:

Allow Boot Camp to complete the installation; your Mac will reboot and install Windows.

Step 6:

The Windows installer will start, use the skip button on the Windows serial if you don’t have one available.

Step 7:

After windows installs, use “Start up” in the system preferences to boot to the Windows partition.

Step 8:

Once in Windows, allow the Boot Camp drivers to install on Windows

Step 9:

Download and install Win2USB here: https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/

Step 10:

Place the SD card in the internal SD card slot

Step 11:

Uninstall Apple’s SD card drivers and check Delete driver!!! Reboot

Step 12:

Run WinToUSB

Step 13:

Choose MBR and Legacy Disk

Step 14:

Image from Boot camp partition to the inserted SD card

Step 15:

Let it finish, then reboot the MacBook with the SD card in the internal slot.

Step 16:

Hold down the ALT ket to see boot menu

Step 17:

Choose your Windows SD card

Step 18:

You are now running Windows, leave the SD card in the slot and boot to Windows 10 anytime without taking up space on your hard drive!
